Rare and super-strong... Scotch from an obscure distillery tops a rare Ardbeg
Rare and super-strong... Scotch from an obscure distillery tops a rare Ardbeg
The 1969 Glenlochy proved to be the surprise winner at a German online auction last week
As regular readers will know, WhiskyAuction's most recent sale concluded last week with a rare and exquisite Ardbeg having been picked as expected to top off the sale.
The results have only just come through with a slight surprise included.
The Ardbeg 1974 did well as expected - it was after all no ordinary Ardbeg, if such a thing exists, but a bottle of the October 1972 distillation bottled in October 2004.
The Bourbon Hogshead 51.4% vol is one of the highest rated whiskies in Jim Murray's Whisky Bible.
"This is a lithe and living whisky, showing shape and form from nose to the longest of finishes; there'll be another scramble to Copenhagen when the world gets wind of this one...sadly I didn't get this until just after the last Bible went to press: as an October 04 bottling this might have won Whisky of the Year..."
Bottle number 198 of 245 it sold for 1,555 - a good investment for the buyer.
However, it was not the top lot, but the centre of a kind of liquid sandwich, with two extra rare (and extra-strong!) examples of Glenrochy's 1969 distillation playing the bread-role.
An original bottling of the 25 year old from the elusive distillery - weighing in at a hefty 62.2% - brought 1,171.
But it was its elder (or more aged) brother which stole the show. Clocking 59%, it provided the auction's nightcap, selling for 1,713.
