The internet is continuing to revolutionise the way the collectibles markets do business - and numismatics is no exception.

Rare coins seller Heritage Auction Galleries is currently holding its Exclusively Internet Gold Auction - in which all the lots will hammer down (presumably with a 'virtual hammer') tomorrow.

Currently leading the sale is nothing less than a 1920-S Eagle, famously designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, graded PCGS MS66.

Previously, the finest known 1920-S Eagle sold back in March 2007 (also at Heritage, in North Carolina) for a staggering $1,725,000 - the second-highest price for a regular issue US coin.

The same coin had previously been purchased by the seller in 1979 for $85,000 - equaling an incredible 11.35% annual appreciation in value.

In other words, 1920-S coins are exceptional assets. The aboveexample is currently for sale at Heritage with a "Buy It Now" price of $605,000- and iscertainly one to watch.

MS66, otherwise known as "Gem Uncirculated", means thatthis is a fully-struck coin with exceptional luster, great eye appeal and only small contact marks which are few and far between.

Other highlights in Heritage's online auction include an extremely fine 1794 Flowing Hair $1 (graded XF45). It is also extremely rare, with only 2,000 copies struck back in 1794.
