The 1949 Buick Roadmaster that plays a crucial role in Rain Man is set to sell as the top lot in Heritage Auctions' December 14 sale of Entertainment & Music Memorabilia.

Starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, 1988's Rain Man won four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor in a leading role, which was presented to Hoffman for his portrayal of Raymond Babbitt - the autistic savant brother of Cruise's Charlie Babbitt.

The car is often seen as the film's third most important character, with Heritage Auctions' Margaret Barratt telling the Daily Mail: "The plot essentially revolves around this beautiful vehicle, making it more than just a piece of screen-used memorabilia. It's the catalyst for the entire movie."

Featuring in almost every scene, the Buick is one of two identical cars used during production. This example features modified rear suspension, which allows for the extra weight of the camera equipment and camera man, who had to shoot while sitting in the trunk. It will be sold at auction complete with a number of documents showing that the car was rented by MGM and United Artists especially for the film.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has an autographed photo of Dustin Hoffman in his iconic role as Raymond Babbitt available, as well as an autographed laser disc cover of The Graduate, which has been signed by Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross.
