Radical SR8 classic car 'with best gear change outside F1' auctions in UK

A 2008 modern classic, this Radical SR8 car could race ahead when it sells in the UK next month

Are you a classic car collector who fancies something more 'radical'?

Then how about this modern classic from 2008: the RadicalSR8. Company founders Mick Hyde and Phil Abbott weren't merely out to create 'another sports car' when they dreamt up this racing classic in the late-1990s.

Their philosophy was, well, radical. Hyde and Abbott spotted a gap in the market for a type of racing people craved. The duo then devised their own long-format, doubleheader endurance modern classic motorcar.

The Clubsport model spearheaded the Radical brand back in 1997. But it was in 2005 that the "big one" was unleashed: the awesome SR8, powered by a high-revving, 380bhp Powertec RPV8 engine. With this engine, the car brought Le Mans Prototype pace to the UK national racing scene.

The RPE RPV8 was entirely designed, developed and manufactured in-house. The Radical went on to score several circuit out-right lap records - including the highly sought-after production car record prize at the Nrburgring Nordschleife.

The two-seater SR8 can also lap Silverstone in the same time as a Formula 3 single-seater. And that's for a fraction of the price of an F3. This Radical classic automobile will auction with a 40,000-55,000 estimate.

Put simply, this SR8 for sale is a fine example of Radical's ultimate racer. And the lucky winning bidder on this classic car has a visceral driving experience to look forward to, thanks to the car's physics-defying grip, relentless acceleration and powerful brakes.

The SR8 RX's gearbox was also described by former F1 driver Alex Yoong as having "the best gear change I've driven outside of F1."

Given that the car was valued at 104,071 plusVAT in 2008, we expect this motor to zoom beyond its 55,000 when it auctions at Mercedes-Benz World, Kent, UK on Friday 17.
