Queen Victoria's royal bloomers set to amuse collectors at Malcolm Forbes sale

A selection of Victoriana including Queen Victoria's underwear is about to be sold in Edinburgh

It seems that there is no end to Malcolm Forbes's links with collectibles. The autograph, Faberg eggs, motorbike and classic toy enthusiasts had a piece of just about every area there was.

So it should be no surprise really that the contents of Old Battersea House - the London home of the Forbes family - has proved to include some very particular Royal memorabilia amongst all the expected antiques.

Lyons & Turnbull are doing the honours, and those honours include selling several pairs of Queen Victoria's stockings, her nightgown and even a pair of silk bloomers.

It seems safe to assume that the Queen would not have been amused by this turn of events, but of course for some collectors specialising in the Victorian period this will be as good as it gets.

Lyons & Turnbull have previously sold similar memorabilia, including a set of silk stockings for just under 700 in 2010, but they are more confident about at least one pair of stockings in this case, expecting them to sell for 2,000-3,000. The bloomers are listed with the same price.

There is certainly an ongoing fascination with Victoria. We've previously sold a photograph signed by the queen on the day of her Golden Jubilee for 2,950 ($4,870), but we do now have other fine signatures of hers on offer on a telegraph and an official appointment letter.

We even have the signature of her grandson, the short-lived and mysterious Prince Albert Victor, who some have suggested might have been Jack the Ripper.

Lyon & Turnbull's sale take place tomorrow (November 1) in Edinburgh with online bidding available.
