Princess Diana 'Walker' dress up 25% in Julien's auction

Princess Diana's Catherine Walker dress led a strong line-up from leading ladies

A Catherine Walker dress worn by Princess Diana has sold at the top of Julien's Icons and Idols 2013 sale,held on November 9 in Hollywood.

The dress, a slender fitting tuxedo gown made in 1991, sold for $75,000, making a 25% increase on its $60,000 high estimate. It was worn by the Princess to a private function.

Catherine Walker was among Diana's favourite fashion designers and made items for her for over 16 years. The present dress appears in the book Catherine Walker An Autobiography by The Private Couturier to Diana, Princess of Wales.

It was originally bought by the vendor at the Christie's sale of Dresses from the Collection of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.

Another of Diana's dresses will be sold through Kerry Taylor Auctions in December.

Marilyn Monroe Redbook award Redbook is a women's magazine that was first published in 1903 and still runs today

Iconic ladies led the sale, with the second highest bids seen by Marilyn Monroe's 1952 Redbook Award, which is inscribed "1952 Best Young Box Office Personality Marilyn Monroe".

The trophy sold for $62,500, a 56.2% increase on its $40,000 high estimate. The reverse reads: "Redbook Magazine Award For Distinguished Contribution To The Art Of The Motion Picture".

Julien's held a sale dedicated to the estate of costume designer William Travilla on November 8, which was led by a sketch of Monroe's famous Subway dress from The Seven Year Itch.

Alam crepon evening ensemble worn by Jean Harlow for a publicity image, a copy of which accompanied the sale, also sold yesterday. Comprising a finely pleated camisole and a full-length skirt with smocking to the train, the lot achieved an impressive $60,800 - a 765.5% increase on its $7,000 high estimate.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a selection of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, as well as autographs from some of Hollywood's golden age icons.
