Princess Diana dress collection set for December 5-6 sale

Princess Diana's friend Catherine Walker made most of the dresses in the collection

A collection of dresses worn by Princess Diana is set to cross the block at Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills on December 5-6.

The vast majority are by Catherine Walker, a fashion designer and a close friend of the princess.

Julien's comments that "their relationship began three months after Diana's marriage to Prince Charles in 1981 and lasted until Diana's death sixteen years later. Walker provided the Princess with many of her most iconic garments."

Highlights include a pink gown worn to both the reopening of London's Savoy Theatre and a show at the London Coliseum in 1993.

It carries an estimate of $60,000-80,000.

Also on offer is a chartreuse Taroni silk georgette gown (also valued at $60,000-80,000) that was worn to a banquet held by the Malaysian royal family at the Dorchester Hotel.

Princess Diana's dresses regularly achieve significant figures at auctions, particularly in the US and the UK.

In December last year a much worn "princess" gown sold for $167,000 at Kerry Taylor Auctions, while the dress she wore during her famous dance with John Travolta made $362,500 in March.
