Pow! Original Batgirl costume could prove a $12,000 knock out

Yvonne Craig's first used costume, replaced for comfort, is fighting back at Premiere Props

The original Batgirl costume from the 1960s Batman TV series is to be sold next month.

Extraordinarily camp and colourful compared to more modern versions, the original series is affectionately remembered by some and sometimes gently mocked on shows such as The Simpsons.

Actress Yvonne Craig wore the outfit in the show, which was always intended to spark a spin-off.

Craig complained of the points cutting into her cheeks, so they made another rounded cowl which was used during later episodes. This is the cowl used in that first episode and there are many photos of her wearing it.

The costume includes: a unitard, utility belt, gloves, boots and cape.

The black unitard and boots are not seen on-screen and were likely an alternate or prototype version that were not used on-screen, possibly because of similarity to the Catwoman outfit, but they were made for the production and ordered from Western.

The item comes with paperwork confirming provenance.

Batman memorabilia can be extremely valuable. For example, a Batmobile used in one of the films sold for $165,000 earlier this year. A suit worn by Michael Keaton went under the hammer at Premiere Props with a listing of $45,000 too (the final price wasn't released).

Well remembered - the original series is spoofed on The Simpsons

Heritage set a world auction record for a copy of Detective Comics #27 in exceptional condition last year. As fans will know, that was 'The Bat Man's' first introduction to the world.

The Bat Girl costume will be sold by Premiere Props as part of their July 30-31 auction (in California and online). It is expected to bring $9,000-12,000.
