Pink diamond makes $10.9m at Sotheby's Swiss jewellery auction

A fancy intense pink diamond ring was among the stars in Geneva on Tuesday

The $10.9m sale of a "fancy intense pink" diamond at Sotheby's in Switzerland on May 17 has demonstrated that the appetite of collectors and investors for top quality jewels continues.

The 10.99 carat piece, which is mounted on a platinum ring, had not been seen on the market for 30 years.

Bought by world-renowned Leviev Diamonds, the emerald cut piece is now the third most valuable pink diamond ever sold at auction.

"That wasn't a diamond price. It was a collectors' item," Sam Taub, director of Belgian diamond wholesalers CLS Diamonds, told Bloomberg.

An emerald and diamond tiara from circa 1900 sold for $12.7m earlier in the evening, an auction record for a tiara.
