Picasso 'Hibou rouge' plate brings $15,000 to Bonhams

Pablo Picasso's Hibou rouge sur fond noir is a fantastic example of his ceramic work

Pablo Picasso's ceramic works were well represented in Bonhams' Impressionist and Modern Art sale in London last night (October 23), with his Hibou rouge sur fond noir (Red owl on a black background) plate leading.

Pablo Picasso Hibou rouge sur fond noirAnother example of the plate, which sold for 23,750 ($37,003) at Christie's landmark sale of the Madoura Collection in 2012

The plate is a fantastic example of the artist's ceramics, which he produced at the Madoura Pottery after being impressed with its work at a ceramics festival in 1946. Conceived in 1957 and executed in a numbered edition of 150, the plate sold for 9,375 ($15,177).

Picasso's ceramics are extremely popular on the current market, offering collectors a chance to own a lively and decorative example of his work at a reasonable price, as Bonhams' Ruth Graham explained.

"Picasso's ceramics offer an exciting and surprisingly accessible opportunity to own your very own work by perhaps the greatest master of the 20th century," she said.

"The wide range of ceramics he produced are decorated with his instantly recognisable motifs, and it is fantastic to be able to hold a Picasso in your hands."

Also selling well was Picasso's Centaure, a partially glazed ceramic plate that was produced in a numbered edition of 100. First conceived in 1956, it sold for 8,125 (13,153).

The top lot of the auction was Robert Antoine Pichon's Le pont Corneille, Rouen, which realised 31,250 ($50,591).

In November, Christie's will offer the collection of Picasso's dealer Jan Krugier in a two-part auction that is expected to total more than $170m.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a postcard signed by Pablo Picasso for sale, offering another accessible item from the world-famous artist.
