Philatelic Traders' Society
The society acts to offer support and assistance to philatelic dealers around the world.
The Philatelic Trader’s Society was founded in 1929 by a group of stamp dealers who wished for a society which would act on behalf of its members.
The first chairman of the society was Albert H. Harris, the owner of a successful publishing company which produced specialist stamp albums and accessories, amongst other items.
The first secretary of the society was Vera Trinder whose business continues to trade in philatelic material today.
The society began hosting exhibitions in 1946. These exhibitions evolved to become the Stampex exhibitions which are still held today.
Since 1991 the society’s headquarters have been based in the British Philatelic Centre in London, England. The society has over 600 members, over half of which trade overseas.
All members must be approved by the society’s council, who base their decision on references. Members must agree to abide by a Code of Ethics and the Articles of Association.
The Society offers three levels of membership.
a) Provisional Membership - is for those entering the philatelic trade or who have been in business for less than two years. Provisional members are entitled to all the privileges and benefits of the Society but must not indicate their membership or display the PTS emblem. Provisional members are expected to apply for full membership within two years. The current yearly subscription is £95 (plus VAT if applicable)
b) Full Membership - is open to applicants who have been in the philatelic trade for a minimum of two years. The current yearly subscription is £140 (plus VAT if applicable). In addition full members may subscribe for a 5 year period at an advantageous rate following their first year of full membership.
c) Associate Membership - is for those applicants of Partnerships or large concerns where there is already a member representing the trading entity. The current subscription is £95 (plus VAT if applicable)
Stampex is a British stamp show which is held twice a year and organised by the Philatelic Trader’s Society. At the show, members of the society showcase their stock and sell to visitors to the event.
