Paul McCartney Hofner bass to auction for $200,000 at Julien's

A custom-made Hofner bass presented to Sir Paul McCartney in 1964 leads bids

One of only three Hofner basses made for Paul McCartney while the Beatles were together is to star in Julien's Auctions Icons & Idols 2013: Rock n' Roll sale on December 6-7 in Beverly Hills.

Paul McCartney Hofner bass The bass is the only example with a link to McCartney on the market, but may never have been played by the Beatle

The left-handed bass, made for McCartney in 1964, will sell with a $150,000-200,000 estimate.

The guitar was commissioned by Selmer, a UK distributor of Hofner guitars, who had it made for McCartney in exchange for its usage of promotional hangtags featuring the Beatles bassist. It was then displayed at the London Music Trade Show, before being sold to a collector in mid-1965.

McCartney has been using his tradmark violin-shaped Hofner guitars since 1961. The original has long since been lost, but his 1963 model remains his most cherished instrument and he still plays iton stage.

This is the only example for sale that has a direct link to McCartney, however there is no evidence to suggest that he ever played it.

Also starring in the sale is a rare Travis Bean guitar played by the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, which shares the $150,000-200,000 estimate.

Any memorabilia from Garcia is highly valuable, as loyal "Dead Heads" continue to collect items from the beloved band with fervour.

Bob Dylan Tambourine Man lyrics New York in the early 1960s is where Dylan cut his teeth, playing the folk cafes of Greenwich Village

With the sale of Bob Dylan's Newport Folk Festival guitar coming up at Christie's, a set of handwritten lyrics to Mr Tambourine Man will undoubtedly prove popular, valued at $80,000-100,000.

The two sheets originate from Peter McKensie, whose family hosted Dylan in New York in the early 1960s - a pivotal time in his career.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a handwritten and signed set list from Bob Dylan for sale.

Elvis Blue Suede Shoes A unique find, Elvis' shoes could be one of the sale's top sellers

Elvis memorabilia is led by a $60,000-80,000-estimated 1953 Martin acoustic guitar that the singer presented to his friends Jack and Marie Lord. Sharing this estimate is the only known pair of Elvis' famous blue suede shoes, which were given to singer and friend Joe Esposito in 1960 after Elvis returned from army service.

We have a selection of Elvis signed photographs, as well as an authentic strand of his hair.
