Part des Anges auction sells rare cognacs at $236,000 for charity

The annual Part des Anges cognac auction beat last year's total by 28%

The eighth annual Part des Anges auction hasreached a new record total at the Chateau de Brillac near Cognac, France, where it offered 27 lots of the finest cognacs on September 19.

The auction raised $235,900, with the majority of the profits benefitingthe French Red Cross. The total is a 27.7% increase on last year's realisation of $187,323.

Taking the title of top lotwas a three-litre jeroboam of Remy Martin Louis XIII, which sold for $43,300 -the highest price ever achieved at the Part des Anges auction.

The previous record was held by a Martell Cordon Bleu 100th Anniversary, which saw $28,382 in 2012.

Following this was a fine decanter of Hennessey Carafe 1900, which sold for $27,030, joined by the Hardy le Printemps Lalique decanter, numbered 000 in a limited edition of 401, which made $17,570.

Also selling well was the superb Prince Hubert de Polignac Knight Trunk, which contained not only a blend of very old cognacs, but also an array of accessories for horse riding. One of only two created, it sold for $13,515.

While the most prestigious names attracted the highest bids in the sale, the lower end items in the sale also proved extremely popular, with several attaining huge gains on estimate. The Frapin Raisins d'Or sold for $12,163, doubling its $6,081 valuation.
