The circa 1780 "sisters" brought 11,000 ($16,605) to the Oxford, UKsale yesterday (May 21)- testament to their rarity and condition.

Boasting painted gesso faces, inset black enamel eyes, rouged cheeks and blonde wigs, the pair was among the earliest toys represented in the sale.

The sisters hint at 18th century fashions, as well as toy manufacture during the period.
