Ozzie Smith baseball memorabilia to auction online

Hall of famer Ozzie Smith's baseball memorabilia collection includes his 13 Gold Gloves

Baseball great Ozzie Smith is to sell his 13 Gold Gloves and 11 all-star rings at an online auction.

The items are among 100 pieces of memorabilia the former St Louis Cardinal is offering at the sale, which runs from November 14 to December 1.

The shortstop is best remembered for his ability to make great defensive plays, winning theGold Glove award for his position ever year from 1980 to 1992.

Smith's 1989 Lou Gehrig Award plaque and the glove he wore in his final game in 1996 are also up for grabs.

"Ozzie Smith was one of the most entertaining and charismatic figures ever to play Major League Baseball," says Dan Imler, the auction house's managing director.

"The items in this collection represent the honours bestowed on him for his many contributions to the success of the St Louis Cardinals."

No estimate has been announced for the items, although the gloves should perform well. Jim Palmer's 1976 Gold Glove sold for $17,000 earlier this year.

Baseball fans will also be keeping a close eye on the online auction of Don Larsen's perfect game uniform from the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers. It is currently on going and runs until December 5.

Before that Heritage Auctions' sale of baseball memorabilia is set to enthral on October 27. Led by a rare Eddie Plank T206 baseball card, it will also feature a 1925 Babe Ruth single signed baseball, valued at $120,000.

The current world record for a piece of sports memorabilia is Babe Ruth's earliest known jersey, which sold for $4.4m in May.
