Original Star Wars rarities come to Heritage

Over 50 lots of the rarest posters from the original Star Wars trilogy of movies will go under the hammer at Heritage Auctions’ July 25th-26th auction of Vintage Movie Posters.

The posters date from between 1977 and 1982, and come to auction from the collection of a late noted Star Wars collector. Included is the nylon banner produced for the original release of the first Star Wars movie, described as ‘the Holy Grail for Star Wars collectors’, valued at $3,000-$6,000.

The highly collectible John Alvin illustrated poster produced for the John Williams Star Wars concert series, an extremely rare example signed by George Lucas, is expected to fetch $5,000-$8,000.

A scarce ‘Revenge of the Jedi’ poster, released with the original title for the third film before it was changed by Lucas to be more in keeping with the chivalric characters of the Jedi knights, is the only artefact bearing this title and therefore highly sought-after by collectors. Both versions of this poster are represented in the Heritage auction.

The auction includes nearly every style of poster seen at U.S. movie theatres for the original three films along with many used for worldwide distribution, rare European and Chinese examples that are highly prized by collectors. A rather odd Star Wars poster for the Russian market depicts a space cowboy in action on a horse, compiled of electronic equipment, and is entitled: ‘Star Wars: A Galactic Western’. Another Russian example depicts Darth Vader as a cat-like figure with lasers shooting from his head, bordered by mystical figures and a sunset. C3PO is the star of the Polish poster, in pop-art style surrounded by a starfield.

A poster known as the Happy Birthday Style poster was issued to theatres still playing the film one year after its original release. It shows a Star Wars birthday cake and single candle, surrounded by 11 of the 12 original figures (minus Jawa). Fewer than 1500 of these were printed. A near mint example is offered at Heritage.

A poster issued by the U.S. Department of Health to healthcare facilities in 1979 with a friendly reminder from C3PO and R2D2: ‘Parents of Earth, are your children fully immunized?’, demonstrating the faith placed in the persuasive force of one of the most popular films ever released.
