An original French poster for King Kong is valued at $80,000

The sale will take place in Dallas on March 22-23.

King Kong Heritage AuctionsThe poster was produced for the French release of King Kong

King Kong broke all box office records at the time of release, achieving $1.7m in the US - a figure that equates to $35.9m today.

It opened worldwide in 1933, to near universal acclaimand retains its popular appeal even today.

The poster was produced by artist Ph. de Buncey for the French release and features a depiction of an iconic scene in which the titular ape attempts to dispatch his unfortunate pursuers.

The colours are bold and have been lightly retouched in places, while a few small tears provide the only flaws. The auction house comments that "the rarity of this poster cannot be overemphasized, as there are two French Double Grande styles, neither of which Heritage has previously sold".

A three-sheet poster for the 1947 reissue of Tod Browning's Dracula (1931) starring Bela Lugosi carries an identical estimate of $40,000-80,000.
