Original Isamu Noguchi Furniture is vintage furniture created by the Japanese designer Isamu Noguchi.

History & Description

Isamu Noguchi was a Japanese American landscape architect, artist and furniture designer whose career spanned over six decades.

While Noguchi is more well-known for his sculptures and large public works, in the late 1940s Noguchi began collaborating with the Herman Miller Furniture Company and joined Charles Eames, George Nelson and Paul László to produce one of the most influential catalogues of modern furniture ever produced.

Noguchi’s furniture is characterised by sleek, almost biomorphic profiles that were deeply influenced by surrealism.

In 1947 Noguchi designed his iconic “Noguchi table” which has become one of the most celebrated examples of twentieth-century furniture and remains in production today.

Guide for collectors

Instances of Isamu Noguchi furniture sold at auction are quite common at both national and international auction houses. However, the most important and valuable examples of Noguchi furniture are almost exclusively offered by Christie’s in which pieces often sell over $40,000.

At national auction houses, particularly in the United States, collectors can expect to pay between $5,000 and $20,000 for original Isamu Noguchi furniture.

Production of the iconic "Noguchi table" ceased in 1973 and has become a collectible in its own right. However, prices can vary considerably as some examples have sold for less than $900 whilst others have exceeded $5,000.
