Original Ettore Sottass Chairs
Original Ettore Sottass Chairs are vintage chairs created by the Italina designer Ettore Sottsass.
History & Description
Ettore Sottsass was an Italian furniture designer and architect of the late-twentieth century.
Ettore Sottsass first began producing furniture when he and a group of young international architects and furniture designers formed the Memphis Group. Here Sottsass showcased his colourful and often ironic pieces of furniture, which featured slick surfaces, squiggly laminate patterns, lop-sided shapes and bright, fluorescent colours.
During his career, Sottsass was noted for creating unusual yet highly practical shapes for his chairs. A few of his more well-known chair designs include his Flying Carpet lounge chairs, Eastside chairs and Harlow chairs.
Guide for collectors
Instances of original Ettore Sottsass chairs sold at both national and international auction houses are quite rare. However, as a general rule, collectors can expect to pay between $500 and $1,000.
Further information on Ettore Sottsass and his chair designs can be found on the following websites; Design Museum, Design-Technology and Design Addict. In addition, one great source is the official Sottsass Associati website.
Strangely, one of Sottsass’s most iconic designs is also one of his rarest. Originally designed in 1972, the unusual looking Flying Carpet lounge chair at present holds the record for the most expensive Sottsass chair sold at auction. On December 6th 2000 at Christie’s in London, a Flying Carpet lounge chair, circa 1974, realised a price of £11,163.
