Original Bruno Mathsson Jetson Chairs are vintage chairs created by the Swedish designer Bruno Mathsson.

History & Description

The Jetson chair was designed by Bruno Mathsson, a Swedish architect and furniture designer.

First developed in 1966, the Jetson has become a classic of modern urban design. Since it was first produced, the Jetson chair has been copied and imitated repeatedly, yet no other chair comes close to Mathsson’s original and pioneering design.

Mathsson’s designs are a fusion of traditional Swedish crafts and Modernism. During the 1960s he developed a unique building technique for wooden chairs in which the components were glued and bent under hot water. Mathsson is often described as the father of Swedish Modern design.

Guide for collectors

Today a number of furniture companies manufacture reproductions of the Jetson chair, however, collectors should take note that only the Swedish company Dux produced original versions.

At present there are only a handful of instances in which Bruno Mathsson Jetson chairs have featured at auction, and prices vary considerably. For example, on March 24th 2010, a Jetson chair sold through Christie’s in London for £2,500, whereas on September 12th 2010, a Jetson chair sold through Treadway in Cincinnati, Ohio, for just $1501.

It is far more common for collectors to purchase original Bruno Mathsson Jetson chairs online as there are a number of online antique and vintage furniture dealers that sell Jetson chairs. These websites are also a great resource for collectors interested in any furniture that emerged from the 1950s through to the 1970s. A few good examples include; Modernity (Swedish), Antique Plus and Artepodean.
