Original Apple-1 computer to star in First Bytes auction at $500,000

An original Apple-1 computer takes the lead in Christie's online-only sale

An original Apple-1 computer will provide the highlight of Christie's recently announced First Bytes: Iconic Technology from the Twentieth Century auction, an online-only sale that will run from June 24 to July 9.

Apple-1 Christie's auctionThe world record for an Apple-1 computer has been broken several times over the past 12 months

The Apple-1 was the first personal computer produced by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak's now-iconic company in 1976.

The Steve Wozniak-signed example at Christie's is expected to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000.

The sale follows a new world record for an Apple-1 being set at Auction Team Breker in May, when another Steve Wozniak-signed example - this time equipped with an interface for a printer - sold for $667,960.

Prior to this, the world record had been set at Sotheby's in June 2012 at $374,500, showing the huge growth in value seen by the retro machines recently.

Also included in the sale will be the 20th Anniversary Macintosh Computer (1997), a translucent Mac SE (Circa 1987-1990) and a Prototype Macintosh Portable PC (1989).
