Order of the White Eagle spreads its wings in Zurich medals auction

Three fascinating Russian rarities lead the medals section of Hess-Divo's numismatic sale

As we've reported, Hess-Divo is holding an impressive set of numismatic auctions over the next two days led by four 18th-19th century coins in gold and platinum (three from Russia, and one from Hungary). All four pieces are listed at CHF50,000 ($51,000).

The best medals in the sale are not rated as so valuable, but there are still some exciting items on offer which a medal collector will want to have a good look at. Whilst three of the most exciting coins are from Russia, all three of the top medal lots are.

Firstly there is an Imperial Order of St Anna made by Albert Keibel in St. Petersburg in 1862 from painted enamelled gold. Of the third model (as influenced by Nicholas I) it references Anna, who was the mother of the Virgin Mary (according to apocryphal gospels).

In exceptional condition, the first class award is expected to sell for around CHF4,000, making it an excellent investment.

Also from Keibel is an Imperial and Royal medal of St Stanislaus in silver gilt and enamel. Breast stars had been approved for awarding to non-Christians (who were naturally reluctant to wear cross-style medals) from 1844 in Russia, and this is an early example of them. It is also expected to sell for around CHF4,000.

Finally, there is a rare Imperial and Royal Order of the White Eagle - a breast star in a similar format to that of the order of St Stanislaus. With a diameter of 87.7mm, silver plated and partially enamelled, it is in excellent condition considering its rarity, and expected to bring CHF7,500.

Hess-Divo's auction are taking place in Zurich and online, starting tomorrow but with the best coins and medals on offer this Thursday October 28. Watch this space for the results.
