'Opulent' 60k Mercedes graces Bonhams

This masterpiece of engineering, owned by John Lennon among others, auctions next month

Once described as a "masterpiece of engineering that redefines the world opulence", and with famous owners including John Lennon, the Mercedes-Benz 600 Limousine will be a big star at Bonhams' Collectors' Motor Cars and Automobilia sale in Oxford, on March 6.

This rare right-hand drive example of Mercedes-Benz's luxury flagship motor was restored in 2008, and will be sold with all the relevant bills.

As well as boasting Mercedes' first-ever overhead-camshaft, fuel-injected, 6.3-litre V8 engine, the600 also features air suspension with variable ride control, four-speed automatic transmission, all-round disc brakes, power-assisted steering and central locking.

'In an age when flaunting your wealth wasn't a crime, the 600 was the automotive equivalent of Monaco. It's a masterpiece of engineering, a quantum leap over its opposition, and redefines the word opulence.' - Classic & Sportscar magazine

A quick look at the car's internal features reveals why Lennon was so fond of his 600. Theseinclude separate air conditioning systems for the front and rear compartments, and a sophisticated system of hydraulics powering the car's multi-way adjustable seating, windows, doors and boot lid.

In addition to those features, Lennon's iconic white 600 featured a rear passenger drinks cabinet and Phillips Mignon EP record player - admittedly neither of which are included here.

With four previous owners and described by its vendor as being in generally excellent condition, this historic 1968 automobile will auction with an estimate of 50,000-60,000.

It will be sold with restoration invoices, an MOT to 2011 and its Swansea V5 registration document.

Bonhams' sale on March 6 promises an extensive collection of automobiles for sale spanning every decade, ranging from a historic 1910 Hupmobile Model 20 Tourer (estimated at 10,000-12,000) through to a 2005 Ferrari/Foreman Mk4 V12 Spyder Recreation (estimated at 65,000-85,000).
