Olivetti Lettera 22 typewriters are collectible typewriters, first produced in 1949 or 1950.


Olivetti was founded in Turin, Italy 1908 as a typewriter manufacturer.

It opened its first manufacturing facility overseas in 1930 and merged with typewriter manufacturer Underwood in 1963, after purchasing the company in 1959.

In recent years the company has become known for its computers and printers.

It is currently owned by Telecom Italia.

Olivetti Lettera 22 typewriters

The Olivetti Lettera 22 was a hugely popular portable typewriter first produced in 1949 or 1950.

Designed by Marcello Nizzoli, it was voted the best design product of the previous 100 years by the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1959.

Weighing 4kg, the typewriter employed a basket shift and a unique margin release key.

It was superseded by the Lettera 32, which was released in 1963.

How much are Olivetti Lettera 22 typewriters worth?

Good condition examples can change hands for between $50 and $110 at internet auction sites. Those with carry cases are worth slightly more than those without.
