Oldest and rarest Ardbeg sells for $16,103 in a very special case...

Bonhams' Hong Kong whisky sale was a cause for celebration in Asia, starring a Single Malt from 1974

Two bottles of Ardbeg Double Barrel single-cask whiskey distilled in 1974became the star dram in Bonhams' sale of Wine and Whisky in Hong Kong (November 23-24).

Number 202 of 250, bottled in February 2007 by the Ardbeg Distillery, was presented in a beautiful bespoke leather gun case "crafted by a traditional guncase maker" according to the lot notes.

The Ardbeg Double Barrel single-cask whiskey, distilled in 1974

Contained within the case were two single cask bottles of the oldest and rarest Ardbeg Single Malt (50% volume), along with eight silver Hamilton & Inches drinking cups.

Another unique pieces of memorabilia in the guncase was a bespoke oak and sterling silver Omas pen, complete with detailed Ardbeg engraving and two hand-stitched leather-bound books.

Memorabilia in the Ardbeg's guncase included tasting notes, and a special pen

They were no ordinary books, but a "Sampling Register" of full tasting notes of the 1974 cask bottlings and quirky "Double Barrel" miscellany of Ardbeg marl and shooting traditions.

Oneof only 250 of these cases to exist anywhere in the world, it sold for a final price of HK$124,950 ($16,103) inclusive of Buyer's Premium. Just imagine finding it in your Christmas stocking...
