Muhammad Ali's Frazier gloves to pack a punch in Angelo Dundee auction

The gloves worn by Muhammad Ali in his first fight against Joe Frazier have a minimum bid of $150,000

Dubbed the "Fight of the Century", Muhammad Ali's famed bout against Joe Frazier is perhaps the most memorable match in boxing history - and now the gloves Ali wore for the historic fight are to be sold on November 30 in California.

Muhammad Ali Fight of the Century Gloves auctionThe gloves are in the same condition as when they were removed from Ali's fists

The auction contains some of the finest Ali memorabilia seen in recent years, all of which has been consigned from the estate of Ali's personal trainer Angelo Dundee, who died in February. The gloves are expected to provide thetop lot of the auction, selling with a minimum bid of $150,000.

The March 8, 1971 fight between Ali and Frazier marked an importanteventin both boxing and politics; Ali had just returned following a three-and-a-half year ban for refusing to fight in the Vietnam war, while Frazier had become a favourite of the pro-war movement despite his deferment due to being a father.

Both undefeated champions, the pair were competing for titles that were held by Joe Frazier but had previously been stripped from Ali following his conviction. Going the full 15 rounds, the match exceeded even the over-hyped expectations of the roaring crowd and Ali was eventually defeated, facing the first professional loss of his career.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale are to benefit the Muhammad Ali foundation

The gloves Ali wore in the defeat are in outstanding condition, with the laces - usually the place where condition is poorest - largely intact. Inside each glove is the "Approved New York State Athletic Commission" stamping, as well as Angelo Dundee's notation: "Ali Frazier, 3-8-71 MSG".

The gloves look set to take the title for the most valuable piece of boxing memorabilia, which is currently held by the trunks that Ali wore in the same fight; they sold for $173,102 with the same auction house in November 2011.
