Muhammad Ali training robe makes $31,500

A white terrycloth Muhammad Ali-worn training robe has sold for $31,500 at Julien's Auctions

A white terrycloth training robe, madefor champion boxer Muhammad Ali, has sold for $31,250 at Julien's Auctions.

May 31 saw the Everlast terrycloth training robe, which has been signed by the star, sell securely within its $25,000-35,000 estimate.

Ali donned the robe while preparing for his 61st and final fight against Jamaican-Canadian heavyweight Trevor Berbick.

The fight took place on December 11, 1981. Berbick beat the 39-year-old Ali in a 10 round unanimous decision.

A pair of Ali-signed, white satin Everlast boxing trunks also proved popular, bringing $2,500, while an Ali-signed training-used Spalding speed bag sold for $2,812.

A limited edition print on paper by Rolling Stones guitarist and artist Ronnie Wood, featuring Ali standing victorious above his floored opponent, made $4,062. Signed by both Wood and Ali, the print soldjust above its $4,000 high estimate.

In collecting as well as in sporting terms, Ali remains a legendary figure.

December 2012 saw two pairs of Ali's boxing gloves set a new auction record in California.

Both pairs - hailing from 1964 and 1971, respectively - sold for $385,848. Together, they now hold the world record for the most valuable piece of boxing memorabilia ever sold at auction.
