Muhammad Ali memorabilia offers respite from falling FTSE investments

With the FTSE100 down 8% in 2011, could Muhammad Ali memorabilia enhance your portfolio?

With the FTSE100 down 8.14% between December 31, 2010 and December 20, 2011, and the FTSE All-Share down 9.19% in the same period, it's clear that investors have found life difficult on the London stock markets this year.

It's why growing numbers of investors are looking to diversify their portfolios and spread the risk.

Martin Bamford, the managing director of independent financial adviser Informed Choice, told the Financial Times: "While you usually expect to get double digit returns from equities, this year it's the safe haven asset classes that have surprised and outperformed."

Safe haven investments such as rare autographs, which offer strong growth year-on-year.

According to the PFC40 Autograph Index, the value of 40 of the most sought-after rare autographs rose by 5.2% between 2010 and 2011,

Muhammad Ali's autograph has risen in value by 13.38% a year since 2000, the index states.

The rise matches similar strong gains for other Ali memorabilia in recent years.

The trunks Ali wore in his defeat to Joe Frazier in 1971 made $173,102 at auction in November.

That figure far surpasses the $57,500 achieved in 1997 for a pair of Ali trunksfrom his bout with George Foreman in 1975, and representsan 8.25% pa rise in value.

Autographs sit at the more affordable end of the Ali memorabilia market.

We have a wonderful photograph of Ali with the Beatles, signed by the boxer, available today for 1,950 (approx. $3,050).

That price offers superb value.

You can be sure that when the man voted "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated is no longer around to sign, the value of his autograph will soar, as nostalgic collectors enter the market.
