Monty Python's famous foot coming to Vectis Auctions

The animated foot used in the Monty Python animations is signed by Terry Gilliam

The famous foot used in the Monty Python animations will be put up for sale on July 12 in the UK with Vectis Auctions.

Monty Python foot The foot was used for the iconic animations, and later signed by Terry Gilliam

The original artwork is signed by director Terry Gilliam, the Python member responsible for the bizarre animated shorts, and is consigned to the sale by animation cameraman David Brookman. It is now expected to sell for between 400-600 ($673-1,009).

Brookman spent just a few short hours recording the German version of the show, and managed to persuade Gilliam to part with the foot. Printed on photographic paper, it is thought to be the only one to have survived years of film.

"A chance has arisen to acquire an iconic limb. It is probably the only such "Foot" in existence and certainly the only one signed by Terry Gilliam, who of course, has gone on to greater things," commented Vectis Auctions' Louise Harker.

The foot, based on that of Cupid in Bronzino's Venus, Cupid, Folly and Time, would periodically squash random objects throughout the show, which ran from 1969-1974.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a wonderful signed photograph of all six of the original Monty Python crew for sale.
