Monroe Subway dress sketch makes $25,000 in Hollywood

An original Marilyn Monroe Subway dress sketch was the top lot at Julien's Auctions

A sketch of the Subway dress worn by Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch has realised $25,000 at the auction of the estate of costume designer William Travilla.

The sale was held by Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills on November 8.

Travilla was a close friend of Monroe who created a number of her most celebrated costumes and dresses, including that dress.

The auction also featured a gown by Travilla based on the design of the Subway dress. It realised $14,080.

The dress itself sold for $5.6m in 2011, a record price for a piece of film memorabilia, befittingarguablythe most iconic costume in the history of film.

A set of images, stills and clippings of Monroe realised $12,500 - a 1,983% increase on an estimate of $600-800.

The lot featured eight black and white wardrobe test images, including two original key book images with three-hole punches, along with various publicity photos.

Martin Nolan, executive director of Julien's Auctions, commented prior to the sale: "You cannot compare the influence Travilla had on Hollywood fashion history.

"His personal iconic representations of Marilyn Monroe's fashions and his incredible friendship with the screen icon is what Hollywood lore is made of."

Monroe's autograph has increased by 6.8% pa since 2000. This steady demand for memorabilia pertaining to the star makes her signature a popular investment.
