Modigliani's Portrait de Anne Bjarne brings $8.6m to Israeli auction

Modigliani's Portrait de Anne Bjarne is now the most valuable artwork ever sold in Israel

Amedeo Modigliani's Portrait de Anne Bjarne became the most valuable painting ever sold in Israel when it crossed the block at Matsart Auctioneers on July 2.

The painting was kept in New York for the auction to avoid the 18% VAT that would have been added if it had been in Israel

The 1919 painting sold to a French collector for $8.6m. It was offered from the collection of prominent Israeli businessman Meshulam Riklis.

The previous record sale in Israel came in 2010, when Camille Pissaro's The Meadow with the Grey Horse, Eragny, 1893 sold for $1.2m.

In February, Modigliani's portrait of his lover Jeanne Hebuterne sold for $42m at Christie's.
