Milton Greene Marilyn Monroe photos help auction to $1.8m

Milton Greene's famed photos of Marilyn Monroe took the plaudits at Profiles in History

A vast collection of Milton Greene's famed Marilyn Monroe photographs has sold at a Profiles in History auction in the US.

The 3,700-strong selection of negatives featuring the Hollywood star formed part of the $1.8m-grossing auction on July 27.

Milton Greene Marilyn Monroe This single colour transparency from Bus Stop sold for $25,000

Highlights included 469 colour transparencies of Monroe from 1957's The Prince and the Showgirl, which made $35,000, while a single colour transparency from 1956 film Bus Stop sold for $25,000.

Each of the negatives was sold with its copyright -a major draw for collectors.

Some 75,000 negatives from theUS photographer, who died in 1985, crossed the block in all. 122 black and white negatives of Claudia Cardinale made a comparatively modest $4,250 - evidence of just how much pull Monroe continues to have with collectors.

The dressing gown Monroe was wearing the night she died auctioned for $120,000 in 2009, a rise of 35% per annum on its $6,000 sale in 1999.

It is not the first time Monroe photographs from the Milton Greene collection have auctioned.

Another selection of Greene's snaps sold for $750,000 in Poland last year.

We have a large number of Marilyn Monroe items in stock, including this signed newspaper clipping.
