Milhous Collection of classic cars rolls into RM & Sotheby's auction

Vintage classic cars from the legendary Milhous Collection will be auctioned by RM and Sotheby's

Vintage classic cars will be rolling onto the auction block at RM Auctions' sale of the Milhous Collection on February 24-25. The collection is on display at Sotheby's in Manhattan prior to the sale, offering collectors a chance to get up close to these magnificent classic automobiles.

Held near West Palm Beach, Florida, the Milhous collection is today rightly regarded as one of the world's most extraordinary private collections.

It features not only classic cars, but also valuable mechanical musical instruments. These include fair and dance organs, orchestrions and theatre organs.

RM is, of course, handling the classic car side of things. Presently on display at Sotheby's alongside two mechanical musical instruments is an original 1911 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Seven-Passenger Roi des Belges.

Boasting coachwork by Aldford & Alder, this car - chassis 1574 - is a prized, well documented and award-winning example. It is just one of several European motor cars which are auctioning from the collection.

One other 'Ghost' will also appear: a 1914 Silver Ghost Tourer, Chassis 2LB, with coachwork in the style of Joseph Cockshoot & Co. Billed by RM and Sotheby's as "an exceptional pre-war example," the car was formerly in the renowned Newman, Lutgert and Magee Collections.

Meanwhile, vintage instruments offered in Sotheby's and RM's Milhous sale include a Cremona Style K Orchestrion. The organ, with three ranks of pipes, percussion and more, was made by Chicago's Marquette Piano Co in the mid to late 'teens.

Not surprisingly, the Cremona Style K Orchestrion is exceptionally rare.

Displaying alongside it is a Mills Automatic Virtuosa. The Virtuosa has been expertly and fully restored, including the addition of a rare factory-added piano. Both instruments can be viewed in New York alongside the 1911 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Seven-Passenger Roi des Belges.
