The Mego Planet of the Apes Dr Zaius action figure is a toy produced by Mego, based on a character from the series of Planet of the Apes films.

Background

The character of Dr Zaius appears in every incarnation of the Planet of the Apes series, from the first two feature films to the television series and the animated cartoons (although he is renamed as Councilor Zaius in the latter two).

He is an orang-utan, portrayed as a scientist and historian who knows the secrets of the planet’s pre-ape human history and who will do anything to prevent humans re-establishing a destructive society.

Although there are several orang-utan characters portrayed in the films, Dr Zaius was the only one produced as an action figure by Mego. It was released in 1974 in the first original series of five figures.

The figure measures 8” tall, with moveable joints on the arms and legs including elbows and knees. It wears a beige suit with dark brown vertical stripes and fake brown fur trim on the cuffs and shoulders, along with a pair of knee-high black plastic boots.

The earliest versions of the figures have standard black Mego superhero boots, but later versions have moulded designs on them and were never reused for any other Mego figures.

The figure was produced using both Mego body-types, and its moulded hair colour can vary from orange to yellow. It was sold carded in the U.S and the U.K, with five variations of the U.S backing card and two of the U.K Palitoy card. The figure was sold in Japan in window boxes.

How much is a Mego Planet of the Apes Dr Zaius action figure worth?

Unopened figures on U.S cards have sold on auction sites such as eBay for up to $100. Loose figures with their outfits complete can range from $20 up to $50, depending on their condition.

Collectors should note that The Mego Planet of the Apes figures were reissued in 2008, with figures based on the original moulds and virtually identical packaging to the originals.
