Mego Chips Action Figures
Mego CHiPS action figures are toys based on the U.S police television series ‘CHiPS’.
CHiPS was a popular U.S television show following the adventures of Californian motorcycle cops. It ran from 1977 until 1983, lasting six seasons and 139 episodes, and spawned a range of merchandise including jigsaw puzzles, a lunchbox, a Milton Bradley board game, die-cast model vehicles and the Mego action figures.
The Mego line was first released in 1981, and was produced until the company ceased trading in 1982. They were relatively successful, due to the popularity of the show, and produced in large numbers meaning some of the carded figures are relatively easy and inexpensive to find today.
The Mego CHiPS action figures
The CHiPS action figures were released in 1981 two different ranges – 8” and 3 ¾ “. The 8” figure line featured Jon, Ponch and Sarge along with a model motorcycle. The sculpting on each of the figures means they bear more than a passing resemblance their real-life counterparts, they came complete with a number of accessories including a gun belt, pair of sunglasses, insignia stickers, a watch, a gun, a motorcycle helmet, boots and a baton. These figures were sold in carded blister packs.
The smaller range of figures featured these three main characters along with two villains – Wheels Willy and Jimmy Squeaks. Neither of these characters ever appeared in the series, and were recycled from Mego’s earlier CB McHaul line of figures – known there as Joe Marconi and Bad Leeroy. These figures feature far less articulation than the authentic CHiPS characters.
The 3 ¾ “ range also had a police Chopper motorcycle, which was sold carded.
