Mego Buck Rogers action figures are toys based on the U.S science fiction television series ‘Buck Rogers in the 25th Century’.

Background

The character of Buck Rogers started life in a 1920s pulp magazine, before graduating to a newspaper comic strip, a 1930s radio serial, a 12-part film serial and a 1950s television show.

The character reappeared in 1979 in a feature film which also served as a pilot episode for a new television series which ran for just two seasons until 1981. The Mego line of action figures was based on the feature-length pilot episode, which is particularly noticeable as the Killer Kane 12” figure is clearly modelled on the actor Henry Silva (who played him in the film) and not Michael Ansara (who played him in the series).

Mego also created a figure of the film’s main villain Draco, but the subsequent switch to television meant this character rarely appeared and was replaced by his daughter Ardella.

The Mego Buck Rogers action figures

The figures were released in 1979 in two different ranges; a set of six 12” figures and nine 3 ¾ “ figures including vehicles and a play-set.

The 12” figures were produced to an extremely high quality, with facial moulding that captured a good likeness of each of the characters and detailed costumes. The Twiki figure also had a wind-up mechanism which enabled it to walk and turn its head. All of the 12” figures were sold in window boxes.

The range of 3 ¾ “ figures were sold on carded blister packs, and were fully articulated. This range included more characters including Wilma Deering (strangely absent from the 12” figure line), and three vehicles which are now highly sought after by collectors.
