Medal from 'the greatest single moment in American sports' auctions in Dallas

This is the only gold medal from the US Olympic hockey team's 1980 win to sell on the private markets

Not one but two celebrated icons of sport will star in Heritage Auctions' final Signature Sports Collectibles auction of 2010.

The first major highlight is Lou Gehrig's 1927 Yankees jersey. Gehrig - aka "the great Iron Horse" - wore his jersey during the most famous season in New York Yankees history in 1927.

Although the era is most commonly associated with Babe Ruth's record 60 home run campaign, it was Gehrig (pictured bottom left) who earned the American League Most Valuable Player Award that year. His historic jersey is estimated at $600,000 or more.

"Photographic evidence leaves no doubt that this is one of the two home white pinstriped jerseys worn by Gehrig during the 1927 season," said Chris Ivy, Director of Heritage's Sports Collectibles division (HSC) in a statement released by the auction house.

Appearing alongside it is the only gold medal from the 1980 Lake Placid, NY, US Olympic hockey team ever to be offered at public auction.

Recognised by many as the greatest single moment in American sports, the victory of the long-shot underdog US Olympic Hockey team over the Soviets in the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid still resonates three decades after the team's success.

A Gold Medal presented to one of the players - the "ultimate symbol" in the words of Heritage - will go under the hammer with an estimate of $100,000-plus.

"It's a great thrill, and an immense privilege, to present these pieces to the collecting hobby," said Chris Ivy. "They're the ultimate symbols of two truly unforgettable times in American sports history."

Heritage's auction is set to take place on November 4-5, offering an array of vintage sports memorabilia and trading cards at its Dallas, Texas, headquarters and online.
