McTear's presents all the delights of Islay single malt Scotch whiskies

Tomorrow the Glasgow auctioneers's sale will be led by great drams from Bowmore and Port Ellen

Tomorrow (July 20) will see another of McTear's much anticipated whisky auctions with around 450 lots of fine single malts going under the hammer.

Several highlights are clumped around the 540s in the lot listing (which begins at 501). Firstly there is a bottle of Pattisons The Royal Golden Perfection Scotch Whisky.

This seductive whisky dates from the 19th century and the crest bears the Latin motto 'animo non astitutia', which translates as 'by courage, not by craft'.

Whilst a few drams of Pattisons would no doubt bolster your courage, it seems likely that a lot of craft went into the Scotch, which is listed at 1,000-2,000 despite its fill (unsurprisingly) falling short of the neck.

A more familiar issue to whisky collectors may be a 70cl bottle of Black Bowmore 1964 - a classic single Islay malt whisky. This is presented in a wooden box and listed at 1,200-1,600.

However, there is a more spectacular prize yet for Bowmore collectors, as there is a whole box full of Sherriff's Bowmore at 6,000-10,000 ($16,000).

All in all, the auction is largely dominated by greats from Islay, as the two greatest remaining highlights are both 21 year old bottles from Port Ellen.

One of these was from a limited edition, bottled to Commemorate the Anniversary of the Maltings. The back label lists the names of the workers involved. Both bottles are listed at 1,200-1,600.

McTear's auction takes place in Glasgow. Watch this space for results of the sale.
