McQueen's Ferrari 275 GTB/4 smashes record at $10.1m with RM Auctions

Steve McQueen's Ferrari 275 GTB/4 more than tripled the previous record for the model

A Ferrari 275 GTB/4 owned by the legendary actor and collector Steve McQueen wowed crowds at RM Auctions' flagship Monterey sale this weekend, setting a new world record for the model.

The Chianti Red Ferrari sold for $10.1m, more than tripling the previous auction record for the model.

The sale not only demonstrates the continuing power of the McQueen name to draw huge bids from collectors, but also the buoyancy of the market for Ferrari.

Dominated by the Prancing Pony, the auction's top-seller was the 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale,one of just three ever built.

Ferrari 275 GTB/CThe 275 GTB/C Speciale is dubbed the '65 GTO

Nicknamed the '65 GTO, the Speciale is amongthe most fabled Ferrari models, selling at $26.4m to become one of the most valuable cars ever sold at auction.

The $38.1m world record for a car sold at auction was set by a Ferrari 250 GTO at Bonhams on August 14.

Top sales at RM Auctions also included a spectacular 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV, whichmade $2m, while a Ferrari F1-2000 driven to victory at the 2000 Brazilian Grand Prix by Michael Schumacher sold for $1.8m.

Non-Italian cars were topped by a 1911 Mercer Type 35R Raceabout, which made $2.5m.
