Battle King toys are a series of military model vehicles produced under the Matchbox brand.

Brief history and description

The brand was first introduced in 1953 by the Lesney Products company, who went on to produce a variety of different popular toys such as large-scale die-cast models, action figures and model kits. Today, Matchbox and Hot Wheels are both subsidiaries of the same corporation.

Although originally the Battle King series toys were sold as King Size models, the 2006 re-issued versions of the models were sold as a two pack-style set of regular sized models.

Originally Matchbox toy models were made out of metal, and later the toys featured grey or black plastic wheels. Models which were introduced during the 1950s could have been fitted with four different types of wheels which ranged in colour and material. The colours of the toys also changed numerous times as well as the colour of the baseplates, windows and interiors.

Guide for collectors

A "mint-boxed" model sells for a much higher price at auctions depending on the condition of both the box and the toy. Because of this, the toys should be kept in their original boxes as much as possible. Collectors often make a hobby out of re-painting old Battle King models, although it generally decreases the value of the toy.

Some of the many different organizations for collectors of Matchbox Battle King toys including the National Association of Matchbox Collectors (also known as the Matchbox Club) and the Matchbox International Collectors Association. The Toyznuts website has a list of the various types of Matchbox models, and the BattlekingsUK website is also a good reference for determining the value and rarity of a toy.
