Marklin 'Chicago' paddle wheeler could see $250,000 in New Jersey

The 'Chicago', a 1900 paddle wheeler by Marklin, will top the Dick Claus collection

Part two of the Dick Claus collection of antique boats and nautical toys will be offered on November 10 in New Jersey, with a Marklin "Chicago" paddle wheeler expected as its top lot.

Claus' illustrious fleet has been named as one of the world's best collections of its type. This was demonstrated in the sale of the first part of thecollection in May, when the Marklin Providence set a new world record for a tin boat at auction, selling for $247,250.

Marklin Paddle Wheeler ChicagoCould the Chicago beat May's world record price?

The Chicago is a clockwork paddle steamer that the auction house describes as one of the few known examples that can match the quality of the Providence. It was made circa 1900-1902 and originates from the first production series. Measuring 31 inches long, with its original wooden mast remaining intact, it will sell for $200,000-250,000, complete with its original box.

The auction house's Rich Bertoia commented: "It's one of the most original antique boats I've ever seen. We believe it will surpass $200,000."

Marklin Kronprinz Wilhelm auctionThe Kronpriz Wilhelm features an array of on board apparatus

Also starring is a huge, 38-inch long Marklin Kronprinz Wilhelm steam ocean liner, which was manufactured by the German company circa 1909-1915. An impressive model, it is powered by atwo-cylinder steam plant and is fitted with25 on deck ventilators as well as a full complement of sea-ready apparatus. In excellent condition, it is expected to bring $90,000-100,000.

Such is the desirability of Marklin boats that they often sell with outstanding increases on estimate. In April, a Marklin model of HMS Terrible sold 26.5% above its valuation, realising 76,000 ($122,611) in a UK auction.
