Marilyn Monroe's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes red sequinned dress
Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ red sequinned dress is an iconic costume worn by the actress in her role of Lorelei Lee in the 1953 film.
The costume was worn by Marilyn Monroe during the scene in which she performs ‘Two Little Girls from Little Rock’ with her co-star Jane Russell.
The dress is made from a heavy silk crepe, and features thousands of hand-sewn sequins spiralling in every direction starting small at the top and finishing in large singular sequins around the bottom to allow them to catch the light from all angles. It also features a deep split to above the thigh, caught by a diamond brooch, and a sheer-tone fabric from the neck to the waist.
The costume includes the label “1-25-1-4286 A698-67 Marilyn Monroe” inside the dress, and the label “1-25-1-4286 A698-67 M. Monroe” inside the matching hat.
It was acquired by Debbie Reynolds in 1971 as part of a collection of Monroe’s costumes sold by the 20th Century Fox studio prior to their official auction.
In June 2011 the dress was placed in a sale of Reynolds’ collection at the Beverly Hills auction house Profiles in History with a pre-sale estimate of $200,000 - $300,000. It eventually sold for a price of $1,476,000.
