Malaya SG13ab/var 1945-48 25c dull purple and scarlet (PT265)

Almost certainly the largest surviving multiple from the one sheet that existed

Ablock of 20 1945-48 25c dull purple and scarlet postage stamps on ordinary paper. The block of 20 (10x2) is made up of rows three and four of the sheet with side margins, stamps 1, 2 and 10 in each row showing ERROR OPT DOUBLE, and the remaining stamps all showing 'Opt double, one albino'.All stampshave original gum (columns 2-9 are unmounted except for a trace of hingeing on stamps 5 & 6 in the upper row).

The stamps in columns 4-9 also show traces of an offset opt on the face. There are some folded vertical perforations and insignificant traces of gum toning, not affecting the superb appearance.

This is a magnificent showpiece of the highest importance and rarity, almost certainly the largest surviving multiple from the one sheet that existed (as described by Patrick Kearney and Andrew Norris in the Malayan Philatelist, Vol. 24 (1983), pp 67 and 80-1).

This item is especially desirable as it demonstrates the full extent of the error across the sheet (most extant examples of the double opt have long since been broken down into smaller blocks and strips).

The item is accompanied by a 2007 Clear British Philatelic Association certificate of authenticity which does not mention the traces of gum toning and states 'full original gum'.

[N.B. The double opt, one albino present on columns 3-9, which is exceptionally clear on the reverse, has not previously been accorded an SGPart 1 Catalogue listing. We are told this will be rectified in the next edition]
