Newly Described; Place Published: London; Publisher: Bassett & Chiswell; Date Published: 1676; Description: Copper-engraved map, hand-colored in outline; colored decorative cartouche & 6 colored vignettes of peoples of Ireland. 38.7x51.3 cm (15 ¼x20 ¼").Decorative map of Ireland engraved by Jodocus Hondius, filled with artistic embellishments, including a strapwork title cartouche flanked by putti, the Royal coat of arms, sea monsters, sailing ships, and a compass rose. At left are vignettes of local people, including the Gentleman and Gentlewoman of Ireland, The Civill Irish man and woman, and the Wilde Irish man and woman. The map is based on Hondius' map of Ireland, with details of cities, political boundaries, and the topography of the land. Issued in Speed's The Theatre of the Empire. Condition: Repaired at centerfold with paper on verso, more extensive around lower centerfold, with paper on verso filling in loss, some of the border and a ship vignette redrawn - the repairs a little crude. Moderate soiling, tape stains at corners and in margins, about very good, still attractive despite the flaws.
