Lot 537: Author: Bowen, Emanuel; Title: A New & Accurate Map of the Empire of Japan Laid down from the Memoirs of the Portuguese and Dutch; and particularly from the Jesuit Missionaries…; Place Published: London; Publisher: N/A; Date Published: [1757]; Description: Copper-engraved map, hand-colored (possibly later) with colored pictorial cartouche. 35x43 cm (13¾x16¾").Well-engraved and reasonably accurate map based on the earlier model of Charlevoix. Focused on Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu with fine detail, the map locates Jedo and scores of other cities and villages, islands, lakes, mountains, etc. The large and attractive cartouche with Samurai and Geisha. The hand-coloring is well executed, possibly later but not recent. Provenance: P.J. Radford, 1972. Condition: A few marginal chips and tears, slight toning along centerfold; very good or better.
