A copy of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1866) has sold for $13,200, beating its $5,000 estimate by 164%.

It's among the highlights of a sale of Rare Books and Manuscripts at PBA Galleries in San Francisco on September 25.

Alice CarrollAlice's Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1866

While the lot is technicallya second edition, it's actually the first published edition.

PBA Galleries commented: "the illustrator John Tenniel was deeply dissatisfied with the printing of the illustrations in the first printing and convinced Carroll to suppress the book at his own expense.

"Only about 28 copies of that 1865 Macmillan first issue survive, most in institutional collections."

A first edition dedicated to Alice Liddell, the inspiration for the work, sold for $115,000 in 2009.
