Last chance to bid for a Marquess' Military Cross

The sale of a nearly fine group of rare medals concludes today

The sale of four nearly very fine medals awarded to Captain Ulick de Burgh Browne, then bearing the courtesy title of the Earl of Altamont for service on the Western Front during the Great War is to close this afternoon.

Browne entered the Royal Scots Greys as a 2nd Lieutenant on 16 August 1916 and was promoted to Lieutenant in April 1918. At that time he was known by the courtesy titles of Viscount Westport and Earl of Altamont.

His citation for the MC read: "For conspicuous gallantry and initiative when on reconnaissance at Vieville and Fesnoy on 4th November 1918; near Le Sart on 5th November and South of Cartignies on 6th and 7th November.

"During these four days he handled his patrols with great skill and boldness, obtaining and sending in accurate information."

Browne later inherited the title of Marquess of Sligo.

The other medals are British War and Victory Medals and a Coronation 1911 medal. Bids currently stand at 1,560 in Dix Noonan Webb's online auction, and will close on this piece in the next few hours.
