KP Mills' Falklands medals to headline at Spink on April 24

Lieutenant KP Mills' Falklands medals are expected to make $300,500

A set of medals presented to Lieutenant KP Mills of the Royal Marine Commandos for defending South Georgia against Argentine forces during the Falklands war will auction at Spink London on April 24.

The set of six medals carries an estimate of 140,000-180,000 ($233,758-300,546).

At the outbreak of the Falklands war in 1982, the Argentineans landed a contingent of troops on the contested territory of South Georgia.

A small group of British Royal Marines stationed on the island under Mills' command fought off a sustained assault, including shooting down a helicopter and significantly damaging an Argentinean vessel.

Mills then successfully orchestrated a ceasefire, preventing further losses and retaining control of the island for the British.

The medals in the collection include a Distinguished Service Cross and a South Atlantic 1982 alongside others presented by the UN and NATO.

A set of nine medals presented to Air Commodore Ronald Berry, a second world war Spitfire ace, is valued at 80,000-120,000 ($133,744-200,616).

Considered one of the greatest pilots of his era, Berry shot down a large number of enemy aircraft in the skies over Britain and North Africa, and was one of a handful of RAF officers chosen to lead Winston Churchill's funeral procession in 1965.

The medals include an OBE, distinguished service orders and flying crosses.

Also included are a range of personal documents pertaining to hisdistinguished career.
