Karl Lagerfeld Tiziani sketches to auction on January 11

Each of Karl Lagerfeld's sketches for Tiziani is to auction with a $3,000 estimate

A set of early sketches by German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, produced during his time at the House of Tiziani in Rome, is to auction at Palm Beach Modern Auctions on January 11.

Over 300 sketches are included in the sale, dating from 1963-1969, and show the shift in the fashion industry from haute couture to clothing for the mass market.

Each illustration is estimated at $1,000-3,000, with bidding due to start at $500.The collection includes designs specifically for Elizabeth Taylor - who favoured the label.

Beginning his career in the fashion industry as a freelance designer, Lagerfeld's incendiary designs proved divisive - although his talent was recognised almost instantly.

He worked at high profile industry leaders such as Balmain and Chloe before attaining his most celebrated position as lead designer and creative director for Chanel.

The sale will also include a range of 20th century decorative arts and furniture, including a Paul Evans Cityscape cabinet valued at $30,000-50,000.

Last year a Sculpture Front cabinet by the designer realised $269,000 at Sotheby's - an increase of 79.3% on a $150,000 estimate.
