Kareem Abdul-Jabbar jersey to see 100,000+ at Heritage Auctions

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's rookie jersey will be joined by his first pair of goggles

The last jersey that Lew Alcindor ever wore before he changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will be sold in Heritage Auctions' February 23-24 Platinum Night Sports Auction in New York.

Alcindor Abdul-Jabbar JerseyIn 1974, Abdul-Jabbar requested a move to LA or New York as Milwaukee did not meet his cultural needs

The 1969-1971 jersey is expected to see bids in excess of $100,000. It will be joined in the sale by fellow Milwaukee Bucks star Oscar Robertson's 1970-1971 jersey ($50,000+) and Abdul-Jabbar's first pair of goggles ($10,000+).

The items have been consigned by Dr Patrick McBride, who served as the Bucks' equipment manager and was given the jerseys after discovering them in the team's stores.

The Lew Alcindor jersey is expected to see the highest bids, as the last jersey one of the NBA's greatest players wore before changing his name. The change came immediately after the Bucks had won the NBA championship on May 1, 1971, though he had already converted to Islam in 1968.

The 1971 season also saw Abdul-Jabbar secure the most valuable player and scoring titles, further increasing its appeal for collectors.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar gogglesAbdul-Jabbar wore the goggles for the remainder of his career, having developed corneal erosion syndrome

The goggles date from 1974, after Abdul-Jabbar's cornea was scratched during a game. His team endeavoured to find the most comfortable and efficient pair for their biggest star, until finally settling on these, made by a French company.

According to McBride: "After a certain amount of play the goggles got scratched. Kareem discarded them for the next pair and I got these."

In a September 2012 auction, the jersey that Michael Jordan wore in the 1991 All-Star game sold for $55,000. The same auction saw Magic Johnson's All-Star jerseyachieve $52,500.

Also starring in the Heritage sale will be Curt Schilling's bloody sock and Mike Eruzione's Miracle on Ice jersey .
